Calgary Professor Receives $1M Federal Grant for Immigrant and Refugee Youth Research.
Dr Pallavi Banerjee was awarded a federal grant for more than $1million earlier this year to create a collaborative research project that explores the intersectional lived experiences of immigrant and refugee youth in the city of Calgary, with a particular focus on building anti-racism initiatives across resettlement agencies.
Over the next two years, Dr Banerjee and her research team at the University of Calgary will work with immigrant and refugee youth of colour and 4 resettlement agencies - the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, Centre for Newcomers, The Calgary Bridge Foundation, and Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association - to help develop programming that support the unique integration requirements of youth of colour.
As Dr Banerjee states, “One of the key principles of this project is to understand how new immigrants and refugees who come into Canada understand both the landscape of racism and moving toward anti-racism in Canada, but also their thoughts and practices that they bring.”
